America to the Left, Europe to the Right

article-0-001f774700000258-115_468x286

During the Presidential campaign, Barack Obama and Democrats attacked anyone who said that they were running a leftist type political campaign.  Liberal pundits would call conservatives as out of the mainstream.

I think today, nobody would deny that the Obama Administration is the farthest politically left White House in generations, maybe back to FDR.

While America has been moved to the left politically during this economic downturn, what do our buddies across the pond in Europe do?  They are moving to the right.

This is very clear in the European Union elections taking place now.  Opinion polling showed right-leaning governments with edges over their opposition in Germany, Italy, France, Belgium and elsewhere.Conservative opposition parties were tied or ahead in BritainSpain and some smaller countries.

Britain may be the biggest example.  The Labour Party is quickly falling apart.  Prime Minister Gordon Brown faced a challenge from his own cabinet, and was asked to step down by leaders of his own party.  It is only time until David Cameron and the opposition Conservatives take power.

In France, Nicolas Sarkozy’s conservative UMP party has shown steady leads.  In Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative Christian Democratsleading the center-left Social Democrats in Germany, which holds national elections in September. Merkel hopes to form a center-right government after the national vote with the pro-business Free Democrats.

It is interesting that even countries that have been hard hit by the recession, such as Great Britain, Spain, and countries in Eastern Europe are moving rightward politically, and trying to decrease the size of government intervention, as Barack Obama and the Democrats are doing just the opposite.

So as the United States goes into ever larger deficits, and gradually growing overweight bureuocracy, the Europeans are warning us to reduce deficit and the size of governments.

Talk about an alternate universe.
