Health Care Reform: Reasons Taxing The Rich Is Stupid

Now, this goes beyond the conservative cry that all taxes are bad.  I agree with that generally, but this has bigger problems.

The Democrats, who have clearly shown that their spine is as stiff as the garden variety snail,  have asked for universal sacrifice…and provided none.  Instead, they go to the pot at the end of the raindow:  the so-called rich.  For Obama, this includes the approximately 2% of the population that make over $250,000.  First of all, that number of people is shrinking in this bad economy.  Second, those are also largely made up by the people that are hiring in this unemployment explosion…kind of a dumb area to tax, don’t you think?

But here is the worst part:  taxing the rich to provide universal care WILL INCREASE THE COSTS OF HEALTH CARE FOR THE UNITED STATES.

The way that Barack Obama talked during the campaign, I really thought he understood this, but apparently he doesn’t.  One of the reasons we have seen a cost explosion in this country is that individuals are not responsible for any real portion of their health care bill.  Other than co-pays (which people already complain about), they pay nothing.  They don’t see money coming out of their paycheck, and never have to pull out cash or a credit card for much at all.

That will worsen under this health care plan.   When you have the majority of people in this country who will be funded by employer credits and taxes on the rich, you now have a system that gives health care for ‘free’.  I am for universal health care, but I am NOT for free health care.

Why?  Because the free market, when working properly, has an artificial system of rationing.  Let us use a certainly imperfect analogy:  automobiles.  People don’t buy instantly go look for Audi, Mercedes, or Cadillacs, because they can’t afford them.  They look for cars they can’t afford.  They don’t necessarily get leather seats or sun roofs.  They ration themselves.

Obama is creating a system where people will demand everything they can.  No system is ever as expensive as a free system.

In a market based health care system, you would have people trying to make choices based on cost.  Now, I don’t think preventative care, such as hypertension and diabetes drugs, should fall under this.  But elective procedures certainly should.  Say you have a stiff shoulder…should you immediately go to a $1000 MRI, or should you try rehab, which is much cheaper and works much better?  Well, individuals would be allowed to make that choice based on their checkbook.

Rationing is a reality, now and in the future.  The real debate is, who will ration? Will individuals ration themselves, or will government impose a system of rationing?  People are turning against Obamacare for this simple fact: they want to be in charge of their care, not some federal paper pusher.

The question is simple…are we going to make individuals responsbible for their own care, which is ultimately a freedom we currently enjoy…or will we have someone else deciding what is best for you?
